Makin' Biscuits

The Challenge:

Makin’ Biscuits is a cat café and adoption centre based in Subiaco, Perth, WA. In partnership with local cat rescue organisations, they give visitors a chance to bond with cats in a welcoming café environment, with the opportunity to adopt their new feline friends through an adoption process. Makin’ Biscuits needed a warm, playful visual brand that clearly communicated who they are and their mission.

The Solution:

Research revealed that cats express comfort and belonging through a series of endearing behaviours when living with their owners. These gestures became the foundation of the brand identity. One of these behaviours involves cats kneading their paws into soft objects, a habit affectionately known as “making biscuits.” This inspired the café’s name Makin’ Biscuits. The name also nods to the café’s love of baked treats. Other illustrated gestures include cats peering out of cardboard boxes, head butting their owners or objects, and exposing their bellies. Together, this collection of playful cat illustrations and a warm, light colour palette convey the café’s friendly, inviting, and playful personality.

Project Scope:

Brand identity, strategic naming, support illustrations, animated illustrations, social media, signage, and packaging design.

The Solution:

In Perth, the community can contribute unused cat supplies to the café. This fosters sustainability by reducing waste and supporting stray cats.
